About the Institute

The Institute of Management, Innovation and Organization (IMIO) supports outstanding interdisciplinary research on matters of management, organization, policy and global technological change in information, telecommunications, public policy and law. The Institute also supports outreach programs that leverage its research strengths. IMIO supports these activities through its centers, programs and affiliated activities.

In its core functions, the Institute:

  • Develops and supports constituent centers and programs
  • Helps acquire program development gifts and endowments
  • Helps acquire research grants for faculty and graduate students
  • Awards graduate student fellowships
  • Hosts visiting scholars
  • Sponsors conferences, colloquia, forums and seminars
  • Publishes working papers and technical reports
  • Manages a leading academic journal, Industrial and Corporate Change
  • Supports curriculum development at UC Berkeley and elsewhere
  • Supports an intellectual property program for Chinese judges and corporate leaders

The Institute also provides essential program administration and support services for its own programs and those of its constituent centers:

  • financial administration and human resources
  • grant administration
  • gift processing and stewardship
  • publications and web services
  • conference planning and support

Through its broad reach, the Institute also provides enhanced program and intellectual opportunities for its constituent centers and affiliated faculty:

  • the rich set of program resources brought together by the Institute enjoy the benefits of cross-fertilization and mutual support and opportunities for coordination
  • the wealth and diversity of individual talent brought together by the Institute provide opportunities for networking and new program combinations
  • the Institute’s leadership in the development of conferences and symposia on timely and important topics provide frequent opportunities for its affiliates
  • the depth and breadth of Institute administrative and program support enable faculty and centers to effectively pursue new research and program opportunities
  • the Institute’s established track record of program development and administration provide credibility to new and existing programs

IMIO is an organized research unit (ORU) that was promoted to Institute status in 1994. Formerly known as the Center for Research in Management (CRM), it was founded in 1961 to advance research in what was then the emerging field of "management science," and in 1978 it formally broadened that mandate to include interdisciplinary approaches to the problems of management, technology, organization, law and public policy. Its director, David Teece, reports to the vice chancellor of research through the dean of the Haas School of Business.
